Breakfast is working out well

Xian and Grandma think that breakfast is their favourite meal of the day! So many choices.... The buffet has everything one might desire, from porridge and congee, to pancakes and more traditional Western style breakfasts, to stir fried vegetables, egg custard and dim sum. We'll be getting up early tomorrow, in preparation for our hutong tour. Today we explored on our own and Grandma learned how to be a Chinese pedestrian (the traffic lights are only suggestions and not to be followed!). She found that glaring at drivers helped, as well as walking in the middle of a pedestrian crowd. We witnessed a rather dramatic episode between a cyclist and a car, which involved a lot of shouting and traffic grinding to a complete stop in that lane! Quite exciting! Xian decided to get into the spirit by yelling at us that we were going the wrong way back to the hotel, however, we made it back intact. She cheered up after we got back to the hotel and she had her chocolate milk and watched her new Mulan VCD in Chinese. (Good thing she has it nearly memorized in English!)

Glad to hear that you guys made it without any major problems, thank goodness for portable DVD players. I had a good laugh over the Gramma pedestrian incident and Xian screaming. It must be exciting to be that close to meeting Rachel and adding to your /our family. We will keep checking on your journey.
Wow! Your posts sure bring back memories. We also took a couple of days in Beijing to get used to the time change etc and it was great for my youngest.
I am really looking forward to hearing about Qinghai as well. Not too long now until you meet little sister. Susan
